Three International Mining Law Professionals With Links to Denver Law to Teach in Prestigious Mining Law Program in Lima, Peru

Three individuals associated with Denver Law's Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program will be among the acclaimed faculty presenting at the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation's upcoming Short Course on International Mining Law, to be held in Lima, Peru, in June.

Two mining law practitioners who have taught as adjunct professors at Denver Law -- Luis Carlos Rodrigo of Lima and Paul Schlauch of Denver -- along with Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy LLM graduate and now prominent Chilean mining lawyer Daniel Altikes of Santiago, Chile, will lecture on various subjects related to international mining law.

Adjunct Prof. Paul Schlauch and LLM Graduate Leonardo Rodríguez Headline Mining Law Seminar in Buenos Aires, Argentina

University of Denver Sturm College of Law Adjunct Prof. Paul J. Schlauch and 2008 LLM graduate Leonardo G. Rodríguez recently headlined a seminar on International Mining Agreements held at the offices of Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal in the city of Buenos Aires.

The seminar was attended by 115 participants from various mining companies operating in Argentina, government offices and private entities. The seminar was also attended by the Secretary of Mining of Argentina, Eng. Jorge Mayoral, who pointed out that mining exports will grow exponentially throughout the upcoming years.

Prof. Schlauch, who teaches International and Comparative Mining Law at the Sturm College of Law, is of counsel with Holland & Hart in Denver. Mr. Rodríguez, who was the "Outstanding LLM Student of the Year" in 2008 is an associate attorney at Marval.

Leading International Mining Lawyer and DU Adjunct Prof. Paul Schlauch to Headline Mining Seminar in Argentina

Adjunct Prof. Paul Schlauch, who teaches International and Comparative Mining Law and is a partner in the Denver-based office of Holland & Hart, will conduct a seminar on "International Mining Agreements" at Marval O'Farrell & Mairal in Buenos Aires on March 25 and 26, 2010.

According to the firm, "The seminar is addressed to professionals and people related to the mining industry, with the goal of providing useful tools for the analysis, drafting, and negotiation of agreements frequently encountered in the mining industry." Mr. Schlauch is one of the world's foremost experts on mining law. He was recently involved in a major mining agreement in the Dominican Republic (click here for details), and in the summer of 2009 he was recognized as "Mining Lawyer of the Year" by Who's Who in Legal Awards.

Mr. Schlauch's visit to Marval will allow him to re-connect with two Marval lawyers who studied under Mr. Schlauch and earned LL.M. degrees at DU: Leonardo Rodriguez and Marina Marti (both 2008 graduates).

"International and Comparative Mining Law" is taught by Profs. Schlauch and Bob Bassett, a fellow lawyer at Holland & Hart in Denver and another well-known international mining lawyer. Students who study under Profs. Schlauch and Bassett frequently remark that this course is one of the best and enriching courses they took in the graduate program curriculum.

There is no substitute for learning from the best, and Profs. Schlauch and Bassett are definitely among the best.

DU Adjunct Prof. Paul Schlauch Involved in Major Dominican Republic-based Mining Deal

Adjunct Prof. Paul Schlauch, who co-teaches International and Comparative Mining Law at the DU Sturm College of Law, recently was involved in a major mining deal where his client Barrick Gold renegotiated a lease agreement for the Dominican Republic-based $2.7 billion Pueblo Viejo project.

Mr. Schlauch, who is of counsel at Holland & Hart in Denver, was recognized in LatinLawyer Online for his role in the agreement.

The Pueblo Viejo project is jointly owned by Barrick Gold Corp (60%) and Goldcorp Inc. (40%).

According to Barrick, "Pueblo Viejo is a long life, advanced gold mining project in the Sanchez Ramirez province with a pre-production capital budget of approximately $2.7 billion. The project remains on schedule to enter production in the fourth quarter of 2011."

Paul Schlauch, International Mining Law Adjunct Professor, Named "Mining Lawyer of the Year"

Paul Schlauch, adjunct professor of International Mining Law at DU, has been named Mining Lawyer of the Year 2009 for the fifth consecutive year.

Mr. Schlauch, a partner at the Denver office of Holland & Hart, was awarded the honor in the Who's Who in Legal Awards. Callum Campbell, editor in chief of the publication, said, "No one else has ever won this award, and the consistent positive feedback we received recognizes Paul Schlauch's exceptional level of performance, and service to clients. We have no hesitation in once again declaring him the leading lawyer for mining expertise."

The many students who have been taught by Mr. Schlauch and I can attest to his pre-eminent level of experience and expertise. His colleagues around the world have enormous respect for him and his work.
